I originally wanted to publish a post about a current research dilemma I am having with one of my upcoming papers. However, after a couple of paragraphs and one figure into the post that I realized it is going to be a lengthy post and will require a lot more time for me to write, fact check a couple of equations and theories, and collect the most appropriate figures to explain my dilemma. I plan to have it posted before the end of June so keep an eye out for my post update :) For today, I am going to talk about my leisure/hobby side-project I am planning.
Cooking! Baking! Roasting! Pureeing (yes ing can be added to the end of puree :P )! Photos!? Videos!? What are all of these words you are shouting at us Gavin? Well, I have decided to start a small cooking/baking tutorial series on my Instagram (@gavin4science_94) and Facebook story. I have had this on my mind for a while, but I have only now started to act on it. I needed a push to do it and the best push I got was from my girlfriend who thought it would be an amazing project to have outside of academia and work. To be honest, i need something to do outside of work that is not fitness related. Not that I don't like my fitness routines or exercises, I just don't consider them to be great breaks from work and everything going on in the world. Plus, watching Youtube and Netflix gives me little satisfaction in terms of break time :/
For some humour, I want to make sure there are no students out there that rely on pot noodles, baloney sandwiches and instant rice pots. There are ways to have affordable meals that can be healthy and filling. I do plan to share some recipe ideas to help out my fellow students :) I don't want this meme to become a reality everywhere...
I started purchasing items I will need for this project to start. I have purchased a starter gorilla phone stand, crock pot, KitchenAid Tilt-Head Standard Mixer, a few kitchen accessories (garlic press, potato ricer, cake pans, baking sheet, bread pans and a thermometer), and a tall camera stand that my girlfriend is letting me borrow until I get my own.
Now everyone is probably thinking "Wait, are you starting a Youtube Channel? How will you find the time!?". No no I am not starting a Youtube Channel, at least not yet. Right now, I don't have a sufficient number of kitchen equipment to do every type of recipe out there in the world, but I am getting close. I still need to get a couple more items, including a new chopping knife, pot, and frying pan. A couple of them are pricey so I will be saving up before getting them. Until then, I have a couple of ideas for first episodes. I wanted to start off easy with a recipe that everyone can try out and enjoy and doesn't require any expensive ingredients. One of my first episodes will be my banana bread that I make a few times a month. It is a recipe my mum gave me, her mother gave to her, and I think she found it in a very old cookbook, which is now lost in the ether. It is very simple and you can make it healthy or filling it will fruity, nutty or chocolaty goodness. My other episode ideas include savoury breakfast muffins (for those who are in a rush in the morning), home-made meatballs and ragu sauce, and an early grey beer cake (yes, earl grey tea and beer can become a cake :P ). I don't plan for the episodes to go perfectly since it will be my first attempt. However, I want to do this for the enjoyment of cooking and baking and sharing recipes that I have found with everyone who wants to follow and watch :)
If there are any recipes you would love me to try out and consider for my tutorials please leave a comment on this post or you can message me on my Instagram @gavin4science_94. I have a list of ideas and will share them on my Instagram and Facebook story starting this coming weekend.
See you guys next time!
